My partner and I walked down Hay Street from the East today to look for lunch. When we were about walking in a korean restaurant, this Carmen's cafe caught my attention. This cafe is fairy new and we decided to give it a try. We ordered a Mee Goreng and a Singaporean Noodle to share. The serving portion was quite big and they were not stingy on the ingredients at all (lots of chickens and prawns). The food tasted quite good and not so oily, suited my liking.

The food was just so-so to my liking but my partner loved the teriyaki beef pretty much. The sushi (two pieces) in the bento did not come with any wasabi (usually with a small squeeze of wasabi in all the Japanese restaurants I have been to). Additional $0.50 was charged on the request and we were not informed till the bill came.

My partner and I went to this restaurant for dinner with two friends on Saturday night. This restaurant was quite quiet, there were only a few tables occupied. We ordered some dishes (lemon chicken, curry veggie and crispy fish with lemon grass) to go with white rice. Overall the foods were alright but the portion was a bit too small for us. Since the restaurant is only walking distance from where I am staying, I would probably consider another visit if I'm not cooking.

It was a Sunday noon, the restaurant was packed with people. I was so excited to see Vietnamese coffee on the menu as the coffee would be served with traditional Vietnamese coffee glass (slow drip filter). Without a second thought, I ordered the coffee. Despite being packed with customers, the foods were served very fast. I had a beef noodle, the beef was so fresh and the soup was so tasty! I loved the coffee too. My friends had a Vietnamese chicken rice and a combination noodle soup. They were pleased with their foods too. I will visit this restaurant again when I feel like eating hot beef noodle soup!

There were no Malaysians at sight when we walked in the restaurant, neither customers nor workers. My friends and I first thought the food was not going to be good. The waiting staff was so friendly to give us some recommendations and promoted the 'today's specials' to us. Four of us ordered two special entrees (chicken skewers, lemon fish and chickpeas cake - not sure if I got the names exactly) to share and two dishes (Kapitan chicken curry and Portuguese baked fish) to go with some garlic roti (flat bread) and nasi kunyit (yellow rice). All of us were very happy with the food. I loved the special entree very much. We would visit again and try other dishes on the menu!

The service of this restaurant was pretty quick. My partner and I got our food in less than 5 minutes after ordering. I had a Nasi Goreng (Malay fried rice), the spiciness suited my liking but it was a bit too oily. The beef brisket noodle my partner had was just so-so only, in fact he found that the beef was not so fresh.

When my partner and I walked in the restaurant, we were greeted by very friendly waiting staffs. This restaurant serves not only Penang food but Malaysian food in general. I was so excited to find Prawn Noodle (my favorite Penang food - Hokkien Mee) on the menu but to my disappointment, that was sold out during noon. So I ordered a Laksa instead (recommended by the waiting staff). This is a Singaporean/KL type Curry Laksa, of which soup is made of coconut milk. I still have not found the authentic Penang Laksa (the fish based soup) in Perth. My partner had a crispy noodle with Cantonese sauce (Shang Meen). We loved what we had and will definitely go back earlier next time to try the Prawn Noodle.

My friend brought my partner and I to this place for lunch. This restaurant is in the basement and was rather quiet when we walked in. I had a combination rice with dark sauce chili chicken and green chili beef while my partner had a Soto Ayam (chicken noodle). The service was quite slow, my partner waited for about 20 minutes for the noodle though the restaurant was not busy. Overall the food tasted okay.

My partner and I went to this restaurant for dinner with two friends on Friday night. This restaurant was packed and we waited for at least 30 minutes before we got the table. Many customers are waiting for take-aways at the same time. We had half a roasted duck, a clay pot alcohol chicken and a sze chuan sizzling tofu. The roasted duck is delicious, with crispy skin. The alcohol chicken and the tofu were nice too. We would love to go back again for roasted pork.

Newton Circle is the busiest stall in the food court, I could see the queue before entering the eatery hall. My friends and I ordered a Char Keow Teow, a Singaporean Bee Hoon and a Hor Fan to share. Despite the long queue, the food were served to the table pretty quickly. The Char Keow Teow was just normal to my taste but I like the Ho Fan.

My friend (who is a Malaysian too) suggested to meet up for dinner at this place today. When we arrived, there were many people waiting outside the restaurant for seats, mostly Chinese, guess the food must be authentic and good. We waited about 30 mins just for our table. Four of us ordered three dishes to share (to go with white rice), a sizzling toufu, a curry chicken, a sweet and sour pork ribs (Pai Kuat Wong) and some Satays as side dish. We loved what we had and were very pleased with the serving size. The Satay is not as good compared to those I had in Malaysia but it is definitely good enough for the crave. Would love to go again for some noodles next time.

There are pepper lunch restaurants back in Malaysia too. I used to go to the one in Pavilion KL which is near to my previous office. It was quite popular in KL for a short period of time when it first opened due to the idea of cooking the meal yourself but the business was slowing down before we came to Perth. My partner and I were curious if this one in Australia actually serves the same menu or if the food taste the same. We entered the restaurant without considering further. I think the menu here is a bit different as I do not remember if they have beef curry in KL menu. We had a hamburger steak, a salmon and rice and a beef curry. I would say the taste is similar (except beef curry). However, the restaurant is small and the ventilation system is not good, our clothes were filled with the food sizzling smell after meal.

This restaurant does not look appealing to me at all as I have never thought of walking in for a look though I have walked pass the place many times. But today, when my partner and I were on the street again, we walked in. The inside of the restaurant is dark but packed with people. For this kind of crowd to be there, it must be for a reason. We proceed to the counter and have our orders placed. The service was quick despite of the crowd, we got our food in less than 10 minutes. We had a Bibimbap, a Beef Don and a prawn caviar roll. Everything was so delicious, my partner loved the Beef Don very much.

It was a Saturday night when I went to this restaurant with my friends. It was packed and we did not make any reservation. We waited for about 20 mins but the food was well worth the wait. It is a very authentic Indian cuisine restaurant that serves wide ranges of south and north Indian food (dosa, pratha, thali, biryani, puri and all sorts of traditional Indian cakes and sweets). I would definitely recommend this to my Indian friends who miss curries...

My partner and I were looking for lunch late afternoon today. This restaurant was empty when we walked in, thought they were going to close soon, It was 3 pm then. We headed to the counter and ordered our food, the waiting staff was a little rude to us when we ask about the food (the spiciness level and etc). We had a beef Pad Thai and a green curry chicken glass noodle, which tasted just fine to us. In fact, I find that the Pad Thai was too oily for me. The small plates that we asked for (for sharing) were not cleaned properly, still with food stains.

I walked pass Nao a few times, from the food that they place at the display counter in front of the shop, I thought they were just selling some take-away sushi or bento. I did not bother to walk in at all as it was always packed with people during lunch time. Today my partner and I headed for lunch earlier and we walked pass Nao again, to our surprise, there was no queue in front of the shop and we thought this might be the right time to find out about what kind of restaurant Nao is. So we went in and sat down at one of the small tables for two at the corner. Nao is famous for its hand made ramen, there are 3 different types (plain, chili, spinach) of ramen that you can choose from to go with all sort of soups (or dry). Add on ingredients (extra chicken, pork and etc) is available for extra charge. We had a bowl of udon and a spinach ramen soup. The serving portions are big and we could not finish all of them. I love the texture of the ramen, so fresh and bouncy. I would like to go back again and try the chili flavored ramen.

Verdict
It is a hawker stall as its name says, I did not expect much on the dining environment. However, I would say that the Char Keow Teow here is the best and most authentic (with pork lark, chinese sausages, chinese chives) that I have tried so far in Perth (compare to those available in Noodle Inn, Penang Delights, Spencer Village Food Hall). They serve other signature Penangite food too such as Hokkien Mee (Prawn Noodle), Curry Noodle, Char Keow Kak (Fried Rice Cake), Chee Cheong Fan (Rice Noodle Roll with sweet sauce) and etc. My friends and I had a few dishes this visit and we were very pleased with the portion and taste. Hawkers Delight is definitely a place to go if you crave for Penang food in Perth! I guess I would go again (pretty soon, next week perhaps) for the Char Keow Teow and other delights.
